Well we're all here because of Duel Masters, obviously, but are there any other card games any of you play? Vanguard, YGO, BF, MTG, Hearthstone, etc. etc.?

I personally, being a hopeful TCG game designer, like to try out pretty much any card game.

If it has a battle game and you need to build your own deck I've probably searched the internet for cards, bought them and played it against my brother. Duel Masters is my favorite though I love games like Magi-nation and Yugioh.

Also, for any other card games you play, what is your favorite deck to play?

Never were I ever a pro player in card games, however they've been accompanying me for a larger part of my life. Unfortunately some of those are discontinued or totally abandoned, but here is a list of games that I can remember right now that I've played:

    - World of Warcraft TCG - most probably killed because Hearthstone was projected to be a big hit card game based in Azeroth. Didn't spend a lot of the time on it, only knew rules and had bunch of commons, played maybe 3 games, but I remember it fondly.

    - Runescape: Chronicles - still somewhat active, it launched in the summer. It was really unbalanced, had few OP cards of SR rarity (diamonds), however it quickly becomes a monotone game. The construct of it is interesting though. Each game is composed in 5 chapters, each chapter has 4 card slots available. You can either fight monsters or use spells, which can also interact with the cards put by your opponent, it could lead to some mindgames and yomi layers, but you had to suspect the cards your opponent was running. It is still available to play, however the playerbase shrunk even more from the small one it initially had. Fun for couple of weeks, give it a try if you want new experiences.

    - Duelyst - you didn't mention it, so I will. Haven't played too much since besides the graphics I didn't really like it that much. It is a board/figure game meets card game. You can summon on specific areas, you can boost or destroy other cards, your goal is to defeat enemy hero. Fairly big and popular, not as much as HS, but who isn't.

    - Summoner Wars - it also has an online version to check out as far as I know, but mainly I know this from playing IRL. Fun game, also as the game mentioned above played on a field with cards. There are many races to play with, nearly each one of them can be "competitively" playable, the major drawback for me is that damage in its is RNG based, each card has a number of dice you are rolling when attacking and usually result 3+ is damage. For spectators it's certainly fun, however losing because of rolling five times a 1/2 while your opponent hits all the neccessary ones can be frustrating

    And finally, RIP sweet prince
    - Might and Magic - Duel of Champions: this card was my favorite card game until Base Set 2 happened. Setting aside Ubisoft trying actively and passively to kill it, until the try at the complete overhaul which incredibly slowed the game and made it not fun to play, there was few decks that could be dominant. Of course it had some OP stuff that nobody enjoyed playing against such as Kelthor or Prison, however through rose tinted "nostalgia" glasses it was still the best card game I've ever played. The main advantage of it it had near 0 RNG (except for card draws of course), interesting mechanic in the terms of field (each player had 2 columns with 4 rows, certain kinds of creatures could occupy either of the rows, spells could be affecting single targets, rows, columns or areas, so not only you had to place your cards in the best position for offensive, but also appropriate against the threats that your opponent could pose). Unfortunately after a while it became dead without visible support from Ubisoft, and then Bluebyte, then it was announced that it was finally getting an arena/draft mode promised long time before but simultanously stopped receiving any further patches/bugfixes and finally at the end of October of last year the servers were completely shut down. One could argue that HS overshadowed DoC, that it had no chance of big success as the numbers on Twitch on really great days and dev streams were reaching maybe 1k viewers, however it is still atrocious how Ubisoft treated this game and its community.

You already mentioned MtG and YGO, so I didn't write anything about them. For sure I'm forgetting some TCGs, if you look for more board game card oriented stuff, then I can recommend 7 Wonders or Dominion off the top of my head.

Also, I have no professional experience in this field, however TCG design is extremely difficult, to invent a system which is interesting and isn't a copy of already existing one is hard. Also TCG market is, at least in my opinion, rather closed with a hegemon being MtG irl and online/mobile HS, maybe Clash of Clans or other stuff like this. Take a look at the most successful card games outside of this trio and how many active players they get worldwide compared to the enormous ones. And then take a look how many are fresh ideas without an already established universe which can draw some new players. Suppose you have a nice new system, now you have to balance it and create a great number of cards which provide interesting gameplay choices, it would be also nice if there was no overpowered or underpowered stuff, and even if you have each of the element done, you still need to find a playerbase for it. There isn't really a conclusion or an idea in this paragraph, only my general thoughts on the subject.

Mostly playing DM, with the most number of decks, meta or not, since I did stay in Japan for some time and went to Duel Festivals every week or so. I did play some other card games, but not a lot since I invested most of my money into DM

YGO: Zephyra Ryuusei, Odd Eyes Magician (unfinished), Vels
Crusade System: Getter Robo, Armored Trooper Votoms+Big-O,  Azure Comet Layzner
    GWNexA (now dead): Zeta, Age
Shadowverse: Royal (all kinds), Ramp Dragon, Dorothy Witch, Hell Elf, Bishop (all kinds)
    PAD (now dead): Green Sonia

Crusade System is pretty unbalanced and the inflation is sky high, but Bandai recently (finally) realized this problem and decided to do something about it and updated its banlist, and apparently strives to slow down the inflation. That said hitting 1X damage at turn 2-3 isn't very pleasant.

GWNexA infalted even faster than Crusade after succeeding GW, and ofc Orphans being OP as shit didn't help its cause and it died some time ago, sadly.

Shadowverse is pretty fun, though the meta is being populated by Witch and Elf currently, so my motivation is pretty low ATM.

I might start Wixoss or Mtg, but that depends on my money really.

YGO - I used to play that card game a long time ago but I stopped because it got out of hand fast.

Magic the Gathering - I still play this card game because my friends play this game also. I just play it casually.

I think those are the only two card games I really played in my life.

I have also played YGO, but stopped because the game expanded too fast and the whole game was wrecked with all the new stuff. Played until the Qliphorts where new and high tier.

Also play Pokemon and Magic, but only online.
Tried out Digimon and Dragonball, as well as Kaijudo, but i have to say nothing comes over Duel Masters, Kaijudo is just boring and a copy of what was once the raw dm game

Duel Masters, ofc, YGO I've played only the DS and GBA games to learn the rules- never played it competitively. Played a bit of Pokemon, but there was just too much luck involved.

Online ones I've played include Magic-Duels, Duelyst, Runescape and Gwent. Most played out of these is Duelyst, but the updates changed the game too frequently and drastically. Gwent is especially interesting, the system is very different from most other things I've seen, and you focus on having your opponent run out of cards in hand before you.

I play YGO and MTG. Also wanting to try Hearthstone and South Park: Phone Destroyer, but don't have time (former) nor space in my cell phone (latter).
Never had a DM deck IRL, I only played on GBA.

Is that the new South Park game currently getting hyped in the iOS appstore?

That is not impossible since mobile games are rather relevant still. I think it's safe to say that it's infested with microtransactions and lootboxes...

It's more like a combination of The Stick of Truth and Clash Royale. Never played Clash, but played Stick, so why not try it out?

Microtransactions or not, I plan staying f2p if I ever get to play it.

Edit: I just found out they themselves tell you about microtransactions on the first screen xD

Hey guys, just found this forum and I'm very happy about that Smile

I'm extremely passionate about TCGs in general. Top technical play performance is an absolute must for me, there is a beauty in someone playing to absolute perfection, and that's what I always strive for. But since I strongly dislike the modern design philosophy of (actually) most games, I mostly play retro formats. In modern YGO for example, technical play is almost obsolete, to the point were you can't show skill in-game.

So this is what I play ^^
In Pokemon that would be Base-Neo, worlds 2006 and worlds 2010 Format and YGO (which at its core really is a great game) I'm in the process of collecting every playable deck from Sept. 2011 Format in its highest rarity (which is really dang hard actually, it's mind blowing). For MTG I have a legacy deck that I really only play mirror matches with.

Duel Masters I really love too obviously, but I only really want to play with the western cards so DM1 - DM12. For me personally, Duel Masters has the same kind of retro feel that the other card games I play provide.
So hopefully I'll be able to find some like-minded people to chat and discuss strategy with Smile

    Welcome to the community @Necrofighter!

YOu clearly are a passionate TCG player. MTG legacy decks are impossibly expensive, how was you able to build one?

Regarding OCG, it's definitely worth a shot, it still has the basic elements seen in TCG but they have been taken farther. Sometimes maybe a bit too far.

Also, many do play TCG here, so it shouldn't be a problem to find people to discuss it with.

Hey thanks for the nice replay.

My MTG deck is actually just Legacy Affinity, so it's not really expensive XD I just like the complex mirror matches of it and the cards look really really cool Smile

One of the reasons why I play DM01 - DM12 is that potentially new players won't really feel overwhelmed by the OCG cards and everything. Also, if someone already has DM cards from back in the day, it doesn't nearly feel as unfair to them playing against DM01 - DM12 cards.

I play the Pokemon TCG and though I've slowed down now was very much into it 2-3 years ago.

Also played Yu-Gi-Oh competitively in my high school days but after Synchros it was too much for me.

Out of the three DM is my favorite. I think it has the best design of those I've played.
